Urban Garden

What is an Urban Garden?

  • It is the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing in or around a village, town, or city.

  • Uses unused space such as such as between building, under highway overpasses, and in vacant lots. Becoming a worldwide trend.

  • Being claimed as the future of food; “smart gardening”.

  • Making use of vacant and underutilized city-owned lots.

  • Growing food that provides not only for those who work the gardens, but also for neighbors, food kitchens, and school lunchrooms. Highlighting awareness to Farm to Fork.

  • The goal is that urban agriculture will reduce each city’s carbon footprint by reducing the amount of transportation that occurs to deliver goods to the consumers.

Urban Gardens can bring nature to your rooftop or unused parking lot. Everything is planted using sustainable, organic methods, and the gardens produce a wide variety of vegetables and greens.

Check out this local urban garden in Redding CA. called Little Sprouts Micro Farm. All items are grown organically in a parking lot! There is access to weekly fresh greens which include: sunflower shoots, sugar snap peas, chive micros, micro arugula, broccoli sprouts, buckwheat, radish, purple kohlrabi, mustard greens, dill, chives, cilantro, cress, beets, and rainbow chard. Edible flowers are also available and a great way to add an extra touch to that special occasion. All products are also sold in reusable mason jars to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

What is a micogreen? They are the shoots of salad vegetables picked just after the first leaves have developed. Little Sprouts harvest products every Thursday. 43 pallets equals about 22 pounds of microgreens. These young vegetable greens can provide a variety of leaf flavors such as sweet or spicy. They can be found at grocery stores in Redding and Chico and can also be found in some restaurants. There is also a weekly farmers market with produce can be picked up from the garden itself.
